Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over verb endings to refresh the student's memory one last time because I want to emphasize the importance of knowing those endings. Then the student asked why they were so important, so I explained how words function in a sentence in Latin, and the differences in grammar between languages. Then we moved on to the next chapter and I had them do an exercise on adjectives. I had them tell me what they are, what they modify, and give some examples. Then, we moved onto vocabulary and derivatives."
"For today's session, the student and I spent some time going over concepts he learned in his class and I clarified some questions he had. Then we reviewed the five Latin cases for nouns and went into detail about their uses."
"I had scanned worksheets and sent them to the student to complete so that I could see where I needed to start and I review. I was able to check them before our session tonight. I noticed that he had trouble with some of the exercises so I did a review on first and second conjugation in the present tense as well as the two case of nouns in the nominative and accusative. After my review he began to see why he had trouble with the exercises and was able to correct many of the mistakes without my prompting him. I went over his next assignment that I will be emailing to him. I saw much progress during our first session together. He learns quickly and is motivated to review Latin grammar before he enrolls in Latin 2 this fall."
"I went over personal pronouns and possessive adjectives with the student at the beginning of our lesson. Her book introduces them in a somewhat piecemeal fashion, and I thought it might be helpful for her to see the chart of the declension. I will review this a bit more next time, as I gave her a good bit of information all at once. I recommended that she look over it a few times this week and maybe re-write it in a chart that makes sense to her. During the second half of our lesson, we did a few of the sentences from the exercises of Chapters 3 and 4 to review our sessions from last week. I'll send a longer email to check in on her progress and share some practice sites."
"I'm really proud of this student, not only how great he did in tutoring today, but that he arrived to the session having done some work on his summer school site ahead of where he and I had left off at the end of our last session."
"In our latest session, we continued reviewing material from previous chapters, specifically from chapters 5 and 6. We focused on the grammar portions of these chapters, looking at the new tenses introduced, as well as the plural. Looking at our work in these sections, he understands the concepts that we're covering, but his recall of the appropriate endings is somewhat spotty. I would recommend that during the summer, and even during the school year, he might work on more practice drills to help cement the material. I will do a bit of research into the book his instructor is using to see if there are any complementary workbooks that would give him more practice, more consistently."
