We have completed homework on finding areas of various polygons. These were either obtuse triangles, or polygons consisting of complicated arrangements of triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids. We also calculated areas of regular hexagons. Often, the strategy that led to the result was to find right triangle within the structure, which usually provided for the height of the triangle, which then lent itself to the formula base*height/2 for the area of a triangle. Other tasks today: finding the area of an equilateral triangle, the area of trapezoid given most sides and the height, finding the area of the "house" shape and "car" shape, finding the area of a triangle that had no base or height given, but was calculable by subtracting areas of various triangles and rectangles from the big triangle that encompassed all of the above shapes.

We focused on Chapter 11 Test Review. We worked on all 56 assigned problems. We also went over section 11.8 (Rotations). The student did well on all his quizzes except 11.8 quiz. I used several examples and assigned exercises from section 11.8 to explain the concept to him. He seemed to have understood it well. After explaining the methodology, I also showed the student certain patterns that would make finding the solution much easier. He grasped those very quickly. Overall, it was a very good session again. He feels very good about his upcoming Chapter 11 test on Wednesday. I can see his confidence level has really went up the last few weeks. I believe he'll do well again.

The student practiced using Euler's Formula applying to polyhedra, where the Faces + Vertices = Edges + 2. He was able to show this formula to be true by exploring the number of faces, vertices, and edges of many different prisms, pyramids, and other solids. He also had some additional practice with plotting ordered triples (x, y, z) in 3D space on isometric paper. Furthermore, the student had some problems where he had to find the distance between two points in 3D space given their ordered triples using the distance formula. Also, the student had to use the midpoint formula to find the coordinates of the midpoint (x, y, z). After completing this assignment, we spent some time on the student's research paper he needs to complete for History. It focuses on researching the roles of the Irish during the Civil War. This 6-8 page paper is due in about 3 weeks. We will continue reviewing it each time we meet.
