Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on balancing parallel ideas in his sentences. We discussed how all paired ideas need to be in the same grammatical forms. We also corrected a session note that he wrote up using rules that we have gone over during our previous sessions. The student asked for a couple of book recommendations, and also for homework ideas. I suggested that he edit his session notes as best he can after writing them, and also to read and summarize an article's paragraphs in one sentence."
"Reviewed topics and areas that the student wanted to cover. Worked on the workbook in Algebra that the student wants to use for the sessions. Went over examples in prime factorization, exponents, division of fractions, and efficient ways of doing multiplication. Assigned the student two problems to do before our next session (similar to ones we did today) and assigned him some reading."
"Today our time was spent on GRE math. Most of that was working with word-based problems and figuring out how to translate questions in to equations. The student has shown marked improvement in basic techniques (ratios, solving algebraic equations) since our first meeting, as well as applying those techniques in solving challenging problems. The remaining of our time was spent on reading comprehension techniques. She is already strong in this area, so we focused mostly on time-management and techniques for textual justification (key words, emotional content)"
"During this session, I helped the student find and insert graphs and data into both her policy brief and PowerPoint. This took quite a bit of work; the graphs were not easy to find. She chose some a few out of the documents she had printed, so I helped her open them back up and showed her how to copy the graphs and insert them into the other documents. She was excited about this. Rest of the session was spent trying to find graphs using Google images. She is improving in the search terminology she is using, and she recognizes that minor changes result in major differences in search results."
"We went over math, English and reading today. Great job! He's getting much better at the math, so we just need to make sure he's keeping up with the reading too."
"I began the session working with Student 1 on 5th grade math. He has been having trouble with math lately (although he's always done well in math in the past). This year seems to be posing a bit more of a challenge. I am slowly but surely teaching him to remember it's just math and it's a learning process for everyone in his class. I keep reminding him that he is a smart boy and that he will get it. He seems to be responding very well to my style of tutoring. This session he already had a whole page of his math done (multiplication, division and exponents) and proudly handed it to me ready to be graded! He got 95% of them right! Their nanny also mentioned that he is participating in class now during math (something he wasn't doing in the past couple of weeks), so we are definitely seeing improvement. I also worked on spelling with Student 2 and Spanish with both children. The highlight of the night was a little math multiplication trick I showed the kids; they were both so excited they squealed with delight! It was a great session and a pleasure as always. :)"
