Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went through videos on one-to-one and onto functions and function operations together and began working through his homework assignment. He is struggling a little bit with finding domain, but we will continue reinforcing this concept. It is very difficult to visualize what a function will look like from an equation and it takes some getting used to. It might be helpful for him to use a graphing calculator or application as he works through his assignments to help check the shapes of the functions because repetition will help to reinforce this concept."
"We worked on exercises for finding exact trigonometric values for given numbers (in radians), as well as given trigonometric expressions. We had some difficulties in doing likewise for the inverse trigonometric expressions, but I will review the additional exercises and relay my workings to her via email later tonight. The student was very engaged throughout the tutoring session and seems to have deepened her understanding of the trigonometric functions."
"We worked on functional composition, decomposition and implicit relations. I think the student has the mechanical aspect down but still struggles a bit with the conceptual aspect. His attitude was great, he worked hard and came ready to learn. Strategies focused around using naming conventions for word problems in order to make the function composition more clear, and being careful with absolute values and square roots. Extra practice would be the challenge problems his teacher assigned. No grades to report yet, no major concerns."
"We worked on functions and graphs of functions. We also worked on domain and range. The student did well after we talked about domain and range and symmetry. He also struggled a little bit with factoring, but we talked through it."
"We worked on his homework on graphing sine and cosine curves. Since this assignment did not need to show work, we didn't get a chance to work on that. We practiced checking his work. Towards the end he was getting them correct."
"We worked on Inequalities in piecewise functions. The student has a test in the next day, and she just needed a review. We worked on a worksheet that her teacher provided. She is a quick learner, and it's very pleasant to work with her. The class was set originally for 1.5 hours, but it went so well that we extended it for 30 min more."
