"The student's homework focused on graphing equations and finding points of intersection. We went over how to find the slope of an equation, and use that for graphing. I also reminded her how to solve for a variable when fractions are involved."
"The student's homework today was on graphing parabolic inequalities and indicating whether the solutions fell inside the curve or outside. After the first few problems, she picked up the concepts pretty well. She needs to be mindful of issues that are unique to inequalities, such as that the inequality flips when both sides are multiplied by a negative number and that it's always necessary to recognize whether or not the points on the curve are solutions. We went over these, and with practice, they will become second nature."
"The student's mother and I met with his teacher and school tutor today to discuss a plan of action. His school tutor is concentrating on adding and subtracting. We agreed that I would concentrate on easy multiplication, money, and time, and add in division next year. I did receive a copy of his IEP, so that should help. We plan to keep our sessions as stress-free as possible and make learning as fun as possible."
"The student's parents were particularly concerned with her ability to multiply double-digits, so I started with a discussion about multiplication in general. We then moved into the actual mechanics of double-digit multiplication. After going through some practice problems, I asked her to try and articulate the steps involved in this kind of problem. Finally, we successfully tried a three-digit problem to see if she could apply what she learned with two-digits. While she was definitely struggling at the beginning, I felt she made a real breakthrough by the end."
"The student's teacher told them to read the section on composite functions. They have not had a lecture on it yet, so I explained to her how it works by working on an example. After showing a few example, the student was able to grasp the idea. We also worked on rational exponents such as fraction exponents. I reminded her the rules of exponents works the same way, just dealing with fractions instead of integers as exponents. I also explained to the student how to factor quadratic expressions using the AC method. The student understood it after I showed her one example."
"The students are both having a quiz in their Algebra 2 course tomorrow. The quiz will focus on the graphs of rational expressions. We outlined a step-by-step process for interpreting what the graph of each function will look like. We then incorporated how to find the horizontal asymptotes, vertical asymptotes, and holes. We worked through the two review sheets that were provided by their instructor and detailed the steps to find the answers. I left a list of topics that they could use for additional review because they were used on the review sheet but not stated."
