Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

University of Louisville, KY Calculus tutoring
This was the student's and my first session together. He had just taken a test before we met, and we decided it was best to cover and master previous material before moving on to more advanced topics. We spent most of our time on finding the absolute maximum and minimum of a function on an interval and breaking it down into a step-by-step process. In the last 30 minutes, we briefly covered the fundamental theorem of calculus and its significance. He is a smart student and is just in a situation where the short summer class is moving too fast for him to keep up with all the material at the same pace as the instructor.

Today I helped the student prepare for her test that will be coming up this week. We focused on solving limit problems, discontinuity problems, and also problems dealing with the intermediate value theorem. I was able to help her get through all of the questions she had before her test and I believe I was able to clear a few things up for her. I showed her how to solve certain limit problems depending on the situation given and she started to understand how to do this. She should do great on her test. She will keep me updated when she needs another session.

Today I went over Euler's method with the student and gave her many examples. Overall, she seemed to understand the topic well. The only thing is that she wanted to understand more thoroughly how to visualize the graphs when we perform the Euler's method. With a few visual examples, it seems like the topic cleared up easily for her. In addition to Euler's method, she wanted to go over slope fields, with which we tried to trace a few graphs and look over her previous exams. Our next session will revolve around the slope field and visualizing/ graphing the functions. She did well understanding most everything today and I look forward to our next session.
