My first math student was a friend, who needed help with her Algebra, in 1987. I first taught professionally in 1989, when training techs to fix PCs and MACs. That was when I returned to Michigan State, where I earned a degree in Astrophysics.

I began tutoring for a living when I moved to Portlandia in 2003. Since 2011, the bulk of that work has been online.

Though the teacher learns as much as the student, the student chooses the focus.

Of course you can pick just one subject, but I do tend to emphasize fundamental principles, which are often common too many. Reminders of historical and cultural context often brings a subject alive, as well as providing an important 'reality-check' that all real knowledge requires.

For the SAT, ASVAB, ACT, GMAT, GRE or Praxis ... when it's got math, physics, or other science and story problems, we can get you ready faster than you might imagine.

We often focus on skills and knowledge specific to such tests, but when necessary, sensible techniques to deal with anxiety and frustration when facing any test or confronting any kind of new material can make all the difference.

Hobbies

My main interests and hobbies have always been "tinkering." That's basically what led me to spend the first half of my life working in electronics; around 1979, I found that taking apart my toys didn't always let me see how they worked. More recently I've fancied myself an inventor. Since I've only prototyped three ideas far enough to discover a show-stopper, I'm barely a novice. Now that my son is a teenager, he gives me excuses to tinker with more common things like bikes, skateboards and with a bit of luck this summer, a land sail!
