Tutoring and teaching have been a skill of mine for many years and in various different contexts. I taught and tutored ballet when I was 15 as an assistant in classes, going from dancer to dancer giving tips and correcting positions, I worked with Girl Scout troops teaching camping & crafts, as well as roller skating.
Our family was a homeschool family. It was my work to set up curriculum and both tutor or choose how tutoring would be accomplished for each of our 7 children, K-12, as well as help each get into college.
Our family were missionaries in Sudan and South Sudan working on Bible Translation which required us to be Linguistic technicians able to teach workshops for Africans to teach them to do linguistics and Bible Translation. We ran workshops in Linguistics for 4 years.
When we came home on furlough, I set about finishing my undergraduate degree in Cognitive Studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN our hometown. Cognitive Studies includes much about the science of thinking and Learning.
Going back to Africa at that time was not to be and we continued here running our homeschool with our 7 children. During that time, I designed and was Program Director in acculturation workshops for a group of 115 young men from South Sudan for 17 months. these were designed to accommodate the trauma, learning style, and maturity levels, as well as help their sponsors. This gave me experience in adapting materials for their use and providing creative ways to teach them quickly how to live in the US. They ate their first pizza in these workshops. I hope I can help any of my students by tailoring lessons to them.
After finishing my undergrad degree with top honors for the department, I went on to finish a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology at Trevecca University in Nashville Since I finished that degree, I have been a licensed psychotherapist working with clients over a broad range of diagnoses for individuals, couples, and families since 2008.. Some of my clients have needed tutoring as part of their therapy. I found I enjoy that sort of work and my students improved their grades. When I saw this job offering, it seemed like I might enjoy it as well.
I look forward to working with students of all ages and in many subject areas. I have a flexible schedule. I hope to hear from you and meet your need.
