Hello my name is Amanda, I am a Title I high school Social Studies teacher south of Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up I was a resident camp counselor for the YMCA, this instilled my love of working with youth. After receiving my degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I joined Teach for America deferring my acceptance into law school for two years. Well I fell in love with teaching; ultimately unenrolling from law school and enrolling for an MAT program.
Throughout K-12 I struggled with undiagnosed learning disabilities, which went undiagnosed until my freshman year of college. In K-12 I developed coping skills to get by academically, but they were time consuming and mildly effective. In my classroom now, my favorite part is working with students with learning disabilities, showing them the ways to achieve their potential.
My educational background is a bachelors in Political Science, and a masters of Secondary Education. In my classroom we use a range of modalities to convey information. In tutoring I like to start with the basics, check for mastery then move into specific details. I look forward to meeting you in tutoring.
Education & Certification
Undergraduate Degree: University of North Carolina at Wilmington - Bachelor in Arts, Political Science and Government
Graduate Degree: Georgia College State University - Master of Arts, High School Teaching
Being active in my community is super important. I am often one fo the first ones to volunteer for a community day, or even attempt to organize one (learning comes from doing...right?) My favorite hobby is working with dog rescues. Being south of Atlanta, there is a large need for shelter volunteers. I started volunteering at the shelter, to fostering rescue dogs, and eventually helping on the administrative side processing adoption applications. I have extensive non-profit administration experience working with several charitable organizations centering around animals, children with disabilities, and veterans. My family is very active, we can often be found exploring GA State parks, and traveling home to NC.
