Throughout my undergraduate career and beyond, I have instructed students aged anywhere from eight to 80. As a tutor, I assisted peers at my college's writing center with essay-writing and spent several summers as a camp counselor at the Textile Arts Center summer camp in Brooklyn, NY. In my last two years of college, I worked on occasion as a substitute Latin teacher at The Browning School on New York's Upper East Side. Because of these experiences and my BA in Ancient Greek and Latin from Hunter College (I will also be graduating with an MA in Classics in 2022), I am available to tutor Latin, Ancient Greek, and writing (essays, grammar help, critical reading, etc.). Essentially, I love everything related to words and languages and want to share this with my students! Though my interests go far beyond the realm of the ancient world, I am interested in this subject the most and therefore derive the most joy from instructing Greek and Latin. Just as I grew excited while discovering my love for languages, I love to see that same spark in students.
As a tutor, I use the tools that students already have so that they may grow more comfortable in new areas. Besides my Greek and Latin, I have studied some Spanish, German, and Italian, and therefore love to incorporate bits of information from these modern languages (one of which a student most likely knows) in order to teach ancient languages. Since tackling a new language especially an ancient one can be overwhelming, this technique encourages students.
Please note that I have very little experience with spoken Latin, as conversing in Greek and Latin is not common. Therefore I will not be able to help with this should this be your goal.
Coincidentally, my interests outside of the academic world also revolve around languages! I am a writer, with poetry and nonfiction pieces published in print and online, and I freelance copy edit. I am also quite craftyI knit, crochet, and embroider my own clothes and love to make wacky jewelry.
