I am a graduate of the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) with a degree in English and Drama education. For six years, I taught high school English, speech/drama, and sponsored annual student film festivals. I have a strong background in fire protection, having a father dedicated to fire protection engineering who arranged for me to live at the fire department in undergraduate years. My technical skills and writing skills landed me a contract position with Fire Protection Publications at Oklahoma State University. Soon after, I became the director and instructor at the State Fire Academy at Southern Arkansas University. My diverse skills and knowledge were recognized by the United States Fire Administration (USFA) in Washington DC from 1979 to 1982. After severe budget cuts, I was hired by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in Massachusetts as project manager in several areas, including wildland fire protection and video production. While at NFPA, I earned a graduate certificate from the University of Delaware in non-profit association management.
After retiring, I taught several data analysis workshops on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for fire and law enforcement, became a certified Apple software trainer, specializing in the professional applications Final Cut Pro X (video editing), Logic Pro (audio production, and Aperture (photo editing and management).
Of all the life lessons that I hope to pass on to students is the value of a solid diverse education and interests. At several turns in my career, I met challenges: being laid off was one of the hardest. Because of my several experiences and personal interests apart from my formal education, I was able to ADAPT. My experience as a volunteer fire chief resulted in monthly published articles on volunteer management; my experience in teaching film history and techniques allowed me to produce some educational videos that led to contract work with ABC News, Good Morning America, and the Discovery Channel. My interest in computers and technology landed me a job with Apple, teaching video editing, audio production, and advanced photography.
Upon learning about my non-linear career path, a few may think I just made it all up. (I did not.) My point is that a good education, diverse experiences, and networking have been key to my life. I encourage the exploration of jobs, education, experience, and following your interests. Writing encourages critical thinking and thoughtful communications; diverse skills create leads to new endeavors, and a passion for life long learning, regardless of age, will enrich one's life and health - and make you much more interesting at parties.
