To learn a second language is to receive a "key,"not just for communication with other people, but to literature and culture. When you learn a different language, a " door" opens for you to "walk through" to a "place" where you can learn things otherwise hidden from you. It's not unlike the difference between someone who has scuba dived before, and someone who has not.
