I am a classically trained pianist with a B.A. in music from Bellarmine University. I have been performing since I was a young child and teaching for over a decade specializing in piano lessons as well as other music and humanities topics. I especially enjoy getting students excited about music by introducing them to lesser known works and composers, obscure genres, and interesting or humorous anecdotes, then examining how these fit into the general scope of music history.
I prefer an individualized approach when teaching and I recognize that each student learns differently. I create lesson plans based on the student's rate of learning and the work load they are realistically able to handle. This usually includes an itemized study or practice schedule with specific tasks and goals to be achieved before the next meeting. I try to use hands on creative activities and games when applicable so students don't feel overwhelmed or bored. I also promote literacy, memory techniques, and critical thinking skills with all of my methods as I believe these are the most important tools for understanding any subject. My main teaching goals are to encourage an appreciation of the arts, instill good study habits, and foster a continued desire for learning in each of my students.
