Tutoring is individualized, focused teaching. My formal teacher education was in the fields of secondary English and history. After teaching English Language Arts (ELA) courses in San Antonio for eight years, I moved to Veracruz, Mexico where I taught 5th and 6th grades for three years. There were no ELA jobs available when I returned to San Antonio, so I became a full-time middle school substitute teacher. I taught computer skills classes until the principal of the school in which I was teaching observed my work and offered me a job teaching 7th and 8th grade Earth and life science courses with the provision that I would earn a state certification in each subject. I certified in both areas and spent eleven years teaching and learning Earth science with my students.
After twenty years in K-12 classrooms, I entered the graduate program at the University of Texas, Brownsville where I earned a Master of Education degree. I immediately began doctoral studies at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi where I received a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I). My specialization is Literacy Instruction.
I began teaching university courses when I entered the doctoral program and accrued fourteen years of experience at that level. In addition to teaching literacy instruction to graduate and undergraduate students both online and face-to-face, I taught a variety of C&I courses such as educational research, curriculum development, and educational psychology, among others. During my tenure as an Assistant Professor, I offered individual and small group tutoring to pre-service teachers preparing for their certification exams. All of them passed, and approximately 90% passed on the first attempt after my tutoring. During these sessions I taught not only the needed content, but also test-taking strategies and especially how to read the questions to understand exactly what was being asked.
I have retired as a university professor, but not as a teacher. I still enjoy facilitating learning and helping students achieve success and my eclectic range of learning and teaching experience has prepared me to tutor any area involving reading and writing, social studies, middle school science, education and any general college entrance exam.

Hobbies • As a potter, I made a variety of bowls, platters, vases and cups. It’s interesting that I threw pottery several years before moving to New Mexico, but I chose to study and use the designs of Indigenous Americans from the northern and western areas of New Mexico. I later moved there and taught for eight years. • I have played around with the guitar and folk music for years, but while working as a Lecturing Professor at the University of Texas, Brownsville, now University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, I had the opportunity to become acquainted with classical guitar music. I am now a “wanta-be” classical guitarist. • Some years ago, I learned to ride a motorcycle and soon started a company which organized and conducted tours for motorcyclists through Mexico. It is no longer advisable to ride a motorcycle there, but I still own a bike and enjoy riding when I have time.
