I am a retired high school math teacher with 34 years experience. I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master's Degree in Education.
My favorite subjects to tutor are Algebra 1 and Trigonometry. Algebra 1 because it is where you learn all the fundamental math skills needed for other courses. Trigonometry because I like working with the identities and see them as a challenging puzzle.
My teaching philosophy is that students learn best by doing and writing out the steps. There is something about the act of writing that engages the brain differently and encourages long term learning.
I will start by explaining a concept and giving examples. Then I will work through examples with the student and discuss the steps along the way.
I also believe that kindness and empathy are extremely important and every student needs to feel valued as a person.
