I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2018 with a degree in Fundamentals: Issues and Texts, and East Asian Languages and Civilizations. I recently received a Post-Baccalaureate certificate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in Animation. During my gap year before starting at SAIC, I worked as an admissions counselor for the University of Chicago where I worked on the international team, as well as created and editing in-house admissions materials for the outreach team. Growing up with a educator for a mother, I have always strongly believed in the importance and the power of education to inspire and revolutionize the way we think. My educational philosophy has driven me to become an educator myself, beginning tutoring other students as young as sixteen. Throughout my time in undergrad, I sought opportunities to enrich the communities around me and grow my knowledge through teaching. I have taught after school art and creative writing classes at local elementary schools, as well as worked for two years as a Korean language teacher at a Chicago Korean school. I have also had the opportunity to teach English abroad; working as an English mentor through the organization Come on Out Japan, I led discussions with Japanese students studying English about important global issues. I love working with people of all ages and strive to make learning a process of self-realization and empowerment for all people. Let's learn from one another!

Hobbies

As both an artist and a theorist, I am interested in animation studies as a way to understand the relationship between practice and theory. Academically, I primarily do research on Japanese animation, with my specialties in representations of gender and sexuality and real/unreal spaces, particularly in the works of Ikuhara Kunihiko. I am also a creative writer and love books (including collecting old books!). I am currently working on a big animated novel about gender and mental health. Feel free to ask me about it! :) I love playing games, both video games and table top, and I've been spending most of my days lately perfecting my island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I also love to sing, draw, and cook! I have two cats named Jerry and Huey that may also make appearances during our sessions!
