I am a student at the University of Mississippi and am in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. I graduated Salutatorian of my high school after attending a STEM elementary and middle school. I have a strong background in the STEM subjects as I have always enjoyed the intricacies of them.
I approach tutoring sessions with an open mind and encourage the students to lead the discussion about where they are struggling. If a student is unsure I am always willing to dive-in and determine where to start. I always try to find a connection between the student and myself, whether it is something as simple as the same favorite subject or a similar hobby. The connection allows me to create a relationship with my student that fosters a positive learning environment.
Once I begin tutoring I utilize a breakdown method. I separate the problems into smaller steps that are easier to understand. I then work through each step by demonstrating an example myself, walking the student through a problem themselves, followed by the student working through an example individually while I am there for any questions. I will keep working through a problem type until the student is comfortable moving on to the next.
My favorite aspect of tutoring is seeing the smile on a student's face when a tricky concept is finally grasped.
