"I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." -Pablo Picasso
All people can learn and apply concepts.
Every person deserves to read well.
Every student deserves an education that is engaging and connects to content and real-world applications.
I believe engaging students to think, question and observe the world is the primary role of an educator.
As a reading specialist and certified Wilson Reading Practitioner, I know first-hand Wilson works for children and adults with dyslexia.
This program also works with students experiencing reading difficulties which have not been corrected with typical reading interventions.
I use "Just Words" for students in grades 412 and adults who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention.
Just Words is designed for students with below-average decoding and spelling scores.
Using Wilson Reading programs with students during extended school year (summers) and most recently, in a primary school in Saint Lucia (winter 2020) affirms my belief that this multi-sensory program is a life changer for people with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
Teaching grades 2-6 students in a public school system over 32 years enriched my life in many ways.
I wrote several grants to bring live animals, puppets, cameras, children's literature, field trips and other materials to the classroom and school. These experiences were designed to stimulate students' curiosity and connect content in real and meaningful ways. Students were encouraged to celebrate their imagination and ingenuity.
I retired from teaching in June 2019. Desiring to bring meaningful project based learning to all students, I started an independent consulting company, Schools with Soul, LLC.
I have not 'retired' from teaching; I am 'reimagining' ways I can continue to make a difference.
