I studied history at UCLA and loved it there. For high school, I studied at Lowell High School in SF that prepared me so well for collegiate academics. I was and am so grateful to my teachers who taught me so passionately.
I started tutoring when I was in 5th grade. I enjoyed Math and English, and a student in the 4th grade needed some help. I really like tutoring. What I did made a positive difference, and that had an impact on me. From then on, I tutored classmates and continued doing so in high school. I tutored a lot of geometry in high school as well as English grammar. The connection with fellow students was/is great. I tutored Geometry, Alegbra, spelling, English grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, ESL/EFL, English conversation, Business English, Spanish 1, and beginner Spanish conversation. For the past few years, I have let Geometry and Algebra go, but still do elementary or middle-school math. My favorite subjects to tutor are ESL/EFL, English grammar, and Spanish 1. I truly enjoy the interaction with students of all ages when I tutor these subjects. And with my years of experience, I am most confident in these subjects.
My tutoring style and teaching philosophy are definitely tied together. I believe in working with my student(s). Tutoring sessions that are engaging and compelling bring the student back for more. I like to find how my student learns best and use those methods during our tutoring sessions. I will lovingly push my student(s) to get past the possible fears, worries, or untruths such as: "I can't do math;" "I'm not smart enough;""My brother is good at math, but I'm bad at it." My students realize that they, too, can do math and English. They can write an English essay, and it can be enjoyable. I like a dialogue with my student(s). I find that having a good relationship with easeful communication and trust really helps. I aim for my tutoring sessions to be fun, enjoyable, productive, and useful. We all need help with something. No one is excellent at everything. With help, student(s) can get past the speed bumps and soar.
Outside of tutoring, I am a big fan of soccer. I love the World Cup and played soccer myself. I enjoy traveling and have lived in different states and countries. I always appreciate chocolate and enjoy trying dark chocolate from other places. I like to challenge myself and learn more of a new language. Currently, I am working on German. I like dancing and sometimes use that in a tutoring session. And I like the Marvel movies: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange are all good!
I have stayed with tutoring over the years because I inherently enjoy teaching. I like tutoring sessions because they are more personal than a classroom. The student and I get to know each other. It never gets old when a student understands something that they had been struggling with. The joy, the confidence that the student now has is amazing. I am always learning and appreciate those who teach me, and I take joy in being able to help a student learn and improve. Better test scores, better grades, more interest in a certain subject, these are all positive results of spending quality time with a student. I also notice that when a student is doing better in school, their demeanor in general gets a boost. They are happier to be in school. Learning can really, truly be enjoyable. Tutoring can really help a student get past a hurdle. Once the hurdle is gone, a student just takes off! And what a gift that is to see.
