Hello there! I have had the opportunity to teach math and science for the past 11 years while I was studying for my master's and doctorate degrees in China. I taught math to students as young as second grade and as old as 12th grade. The math topics I tutored included: basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, math league, trigonometry, SAT math, IB math (including the Internal Assessment) and advanced American Math Competition. I have taught groups of as many as 20 students, as well as individual classes. I also taught science AP Biology classes and tutored both Biology and Chemistry to middle school and high school students. Most of my biology students were either AP or IB students, and we covered core material, common problem areas (like the Kreb's cycle and the nervous system), developed their Internal Assessment (IA) for IB students, as well as preparing for the IB/AP test itself.
Returning to the USA after my graduate degrees, I have discovered that I miss teaching and the daily interaction with students. Just like any job, the students had good days and bad, but overall, they showed up to learn and I showed up to teach. The vast majority of my students found they began to enjoy and excel in math and science once the concepts were conveyed to them in a way they could absorb. Getting the chance to make math and science more enjoyable for students is remarkably rewarding, and it is something I would like to continue doing. Let me know if you'd like study with me!
I have tutored a wide variety of math subjects, from simple arithmetic to SAT math to algebra, all the way through advanced American Math Competition (AMC) material that dealt with number theory and graphing imaginary numbers. My students varied from disinterested in math to gifted in math, and I tailored the class to fit the students' individual needs. My younger students have virtually all seen notable improvements in both their interest in math and their achievement in math class at school. One of my students, Hanna, has been studying with me since second grade, and she went from the second lowest math class in her grade to the second highest in one year. I have coached numerous SAT math students, and have seen their average SAT math scores raise 75-100 points (usually over a 3 month tutoring period). One of my advanced AMC math students in Beijing named Alex received the highest score in the North China.
I majored in Biology for my undergraduate degree, and have been tutoring Biology and Chemistry for over 11 years in China. I have taught numerous AP Biology classes at international high schools and academies in Beijing. I have also tutored both Chemistry and Biology. I have a lot of experience working with students who are struggling, and am easily able to pinpoint problem areas, which helps clear any roadblocks in the students' understanding. I have worked with IB students to develop their experiments for their Internal Assessments (IA), and have coached them through the development and writing of their final IA, including any necessary statistics and science formatting. I have coached students in AP and IB test preparation, including both molecular and ecological, and help students choose work with their strengths to achieve a better test score.
If you want to improve your understanding or achievement in science and math, or you just want to develop your interest in these topics, then I look forward to working with you!
