I'm a junior mechanical engineer, trained linguist and former ski instructor with six younger siblings. I believe that people learn better and more effectively when they're enjoying themselves. Kids should have the opportunity to enjoy learning without being afraid of subjects they're struggling with.
As a mechanical engineer, I have a solid grounding in linear algebra, calculus and the physical sciences. I also have some great refutations for frustrated demands to know when algebra, geometry and derivatives could possibly be useful in the real world.
You won't hear this often, but I love grammar and the mechanics of language. My background in linguistics informs my approach to tutoring and assisting. Language, particularly standardized written language, is a regularized system which we use to get ideas out of our heads and into other people's. It's sad how many people think they can't use it effectively. I really enjoy showing them that they can. I've proofread journal articles, extracts from theses, friends' novels, and engineering reports and documents. I've also worked with the writers on persistent grammatical issues, and with any anxieties tied to structuring and writing the pieces.
In my personal time, I enjoy making music, exploring with my dog, stickfighting, reading science fiction, and tabletop roleplaying.
