I am an International Baccalaureate Alum from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Colorado. I graduated from Lakewood High School in May of 2018. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in both Psychology and Spanish with a minor in Social Work from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.

I have been a tutor in two settings before working through Varsity Tutors. In my freshman year of high school, I tutored a third grader in grade-level math and reading fluency and comprehension. Together, we worked on her skills in reading aloud, multiplication tables, and how to handle money. Then, in the summer before my junior year of high school, I tutored a rising eighth grader in writing and advanced math. I mainly went over the components of a five-paragraph essay and taught her the unit circle, amongst other concepts. Each experience was enlightening in its own way, and I am eager to use what I learned through these experiences to help more students.

I started working through Varsity Tutors in May of 2019 and have greatly enjoyed the number of opportunities available to me as a tutor. I have primarily tutored students on standardized test concepts and strategies useful for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Although this has been my focus on this platform, I am more than eager to tutor in any subject area listed on my profile. These subjects include essay writing/ editing techniques, middle school math and writing, Spanish 1-4, Algebra, amongst many more.

I enjoy working with students with their writing and math abilities the most because I find these subjects the easiest for me to explain and help others understand. I have a good eye for picking out what can/should be changed in an essay to increase the overall fluency and organization through paying close attention to detail. However, I am very qualified for every subject listed on my profile and am excited to work with students in all of these subjects. As I am a college student, I can also provide insight into college admissions essays. My knowledge of the IB program also enables me to help current IB students with studying for their exams (however, I am currently only cleared to tutor in IB Language A in English) and writing their Extended Essays.

As a student myself, I value the importance of hard work and dedication in my studies. These values are mirrored in my teaching philosophy: I reward students for good work, I encourage them when they are struggling to understand a concept, and I try to use whatever methods I can to help them succeed. Every person learns a little differently, so while I have certain tools that I use to help students, sometimes I will need to modify my style to help a student more effectively. I believe in repetition and hands-on practice as the best way to influence retention. Throughout each session, I work with each student using various practice problems and lessen my involvement more with each one until the student can arrive at the correct answer (if the practice problem has a correct answer) consistently on their own. I also start each session with a review of a couple topics that we have already learned and sometimes give my students a small homework assignment for them to complete on their own to further enforce retention. However, the most important part of my teaching philosophy is my belief in the importance of the student-tutor relationship. I am eager to learn about my students and I want them to feel comfortable around me, so one of the first things that I do is try to get to know them and have them get to know me. After familiarity is established, it is easier for students to feel comfortable to take risks and ask questions, both very important parts of learning.

Outside of school, I like exercising, reading, and watching Netflix. I have played Ultimate Frisbee for five years; it is a sport that combines aspects of soccer and football, is non-contact, and stresses the importance of cooperation with teammates and players on other teams. It is a great source of exercise and I have met some of my best friends through the sport. Aside from frisbee, I enjoy exercising in the form of exploring different hiking trails. I hiked my first 14er a couple summers ago and I look forward to hiking more of them in the future. As for reading, I mainly enjoy realistic fiction and romance novels, but I've also gotten into magical realism. I like a variety of shows on Netflix as well.

I am eager to give help in any way that I can to students this summer. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to working with you!
