Tian Guan was born and raised in China, where his interest in mathematics sparked when he was in elementary school. He spent two years at Green River College with a major in Aeronautical Engineering and graduated with an associate degree. Tian obtained his Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics in September 2018 from University of California, Davis.

Tian participated in the SUMmER program on the topic of knot theory at Seattle University in 2016. His team extended the Link Smoothing Game introduced by Henrich and Johnson in 2013. His team also attempted to answer open questions about the Link Smoothing Game by applying techniques of combinatorial game theory. They presented their work at the UnKnot Conference III at Denison University and the 2016 Research Symposium at University of Washington, Bothell.

Tian was president of the Math Club at UC-Davis for the 2017-2018 academic year which helped him become more responsible. He is also very passionate about teaching mathematics. In fact, Tian has worked as a math tutor for one year at Green River College. Furthermore, he served as a learning assistant for the MAT 17 calculus series through one academic year. He also gained teaching experience and provided one-on-one help to students on mathematical problems at Pioneer High School through an internship.

Tian also interned in the UCD Integration Engineering Lab (IEL) for one year. The robotic platforms developed at the IEL are applied in different fields such as K-12 education. C-STEM day is an annual event for K-12 students learning mathematics through robotic programming competitions. Tian wrote challenge task descriptions and participated in the challenge help team for the 2017 C-STEM Day.

In his spare time, Tian enjoys playing billiards and traveling with his friends.
