I am a recent graduate of Columbia University with a Master's in East Asian Regional Studies. I obtained my undergraduate in accounting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a minor in East Asian Language and Culture. I am fluent in Mandarin.
I've been tutoring for two to three years now, with a focus on English, test prep, and essay editing. I first started with SAT test prep for high school students, but gradually moved to a concentration on English essay-writing and general English reading and writing for students aged middle school to college. I do have experience tutoring English to students who are learning it as a second language, with especial success to Mandarin-speaking students. In addition, I do also have experience teaching Mandarin to adults.
I am passionate about history, literature, social economics, and broad topics in social sciences, and I incorporate discussions about such factors whenever applicable when tutoring students (for instance, if I'm tutoring English reading and literature, I try to give background knowledge to my students for more perspective). My focus is always to individualize my method to each student and to teach them skills to self-teach and to think critically for the future.
