My background is in Spanish Education and Applied Linguistics. What started as a love of Spanish quickly evolved into a fascination of how we teach and learn languages. As a Spanish teacher and ESL tutor, I observed a great deal of anxiety that surrounds learning a foreign language. Thus, when conducting my classes I am always sure to keep this in mind to create the most relaxed environment possible.
I believe that language is best taught and learned when presented in an authentic manner. With my guidance, students will learn to use Spanish and English through real world application and the use of authentic materials (music, newspapers, etc.). This is another approach I've found puts students more at ease.
While this is my philosophy as a language teacher, I also understand the importance of mastering grammatical structures. This comes in handy for most high school course work as well as preparation for the Spanish Praxis, SAT 2 and the AP Spanish exam.
During the 4.5 years I lived in Spain, I mastered my Spanish skills and taught ESL to students of diverse backgrounds. This experience also enabled me to tailor my classes based on an individual student's needs.
I look forward to working with you and showing you that there is so much more to a language than long vocabulary lists!
