My favorite subjects in school have always been music and math, and I've been playing soccer since about the time I could walk. The three don't seem to have much in common, but studying and teaching each has shown me different ways for people to process and retain information. What I've found, in myself and in my students, is that memorizing and remembering are very different from true understanding.
My job as a teacher is to help students understand. I believe in dealing with the fundamental ideas of a topic-- discussing them, practicing them, and applying them--until they aren't just a string of memorized words, but a fully formed idea that the student can use and build upon. I also believe in creating a comfortable, positive learning environment. Students tend to feel a lot of pressure and negativity, making them less eager and less able to learn. My goal in each tutoring session is for the student to build their understanding of the topic, and enjoy themselves in the process.
