The three things I know best are math, music, and soccer. They don't seem to have much in common, but studying and teaching each has shown me different ways people to process and retain information. What I've found, in myself and in my students, is that memorization is very different from true understanding.
My aim is to help students understand. I believe in dealing with the fundamental ideas of a topic-- discussing them, practicing them, and applying them--until they aren't just a string of memorized words, but a fully formed idea that the student can use and build upon.
I also believe in creating a comfortable, positive learning environment that minimizes stress and self-deprecation. My goal in each tutoring session is for the student to build their understanding of the topic, and enjoy themselves in the process.
