Hello, I'm Sofia! I am a student at UNC and have tutored for five years, both in group settings (at community centers and an elementary school) and privately. I love tutoring, as it allows me to share my passion for learning with amazing young people! I have tutored elementary, middle, and high schoolers in a variety of subjects (math, reading, writing, science, test prep) and I have experience working with students from all sorts of backgrounds, including children with learning disabilities and children from underserved communities.
The core of my teaching philosophy is making learning fun! I adapt my techniques to the needs and interests of the student and I always make my lessons interactive. I am extremely positive and I love finding innovative ways to recognize tutees for their effort and accomplishments. This approach emphasizes consistent praise and encouragement, regardless of whether the student answers questions correctly. This way, tutees do not feel as much pressure during tutoring sessions and are able to reduce stress and distractions. I am very patient and I guide students through each session, responding to their questions and asking follow-ups to assess progress.
I took the PSAT and SAT fairly recently, so I am familiar with the new format and the differences between the two tests. I use new practice materials and emphasize time management to thoroughly prepare my students for test day!
I scored a 770 on the math section of the SAT and I believe that my ability to deconstruct and explain abstract concepts using real-world phenomena is one of my biggest assets when it comes to tutoring this section!
Although I love all subjects, English will always be my favorite! Sharing this passion with students is a true source of pride and joy for me. I scored a 780 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the SAT and am well-versed in grammar rules, writing fluency, and literary analysis, but my goal is not solely to help tutees achieve the best standardized test score possible. I want to support students and help them develop or further their love for learning!
Please contact me to learn more and/or schedule sessions! I'd love to hear from you! :)
