As a student of mathematics, I have had the pleasure of learning from great professors, as well as some not-so-great. Both of which taught me important lessons. I find that it helps to first explain the big picture of a section to give students a better understanding of what direction we're headed in. Many students get lost simply because they don't know what it is they're trying to do. I then introduce concepts through a variety of perspectives (graphs, applied situations, and proofs), as one explanation of a concept typically does not click for everyone. I start students out with basic examples, gradually increasing the difficulty conceptually more than algebraically, as confusing concepts are much harder to grasp than fixing algebraic errors. Students often get discouraged when they believe the material is too difficult. I, myself, have gotten frustrated many times when stumped on a problem. However, I truly believe that the material just needs better clarification. Students will remain frustrated when help isn't available, and trying to continue further into the semester is like attempting to fix a car with a broken tool. My philosophy is that doing 10 conceptually difficult problems a week is more beneficial than solving 100 simple equations. In order to solve more challenging problems, students must be understand the concepts and their relationships to eachother. I want my students to be able to explain the math, not just do the math. I believe mathematics is the most valuable field a student can engage themselves in. Not only does it help develop analytical skills, but it is applicable in all aspects of life. A strong foundation in mathematics will open doors to almost anything.
