I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I majored in Special Education and minored in Spanish and Psychology. My background gave me experience working with a variety of students with and without disabilities, most of which is with students in upper grades, in the areas of English/Language Arts and math, particularly Algebra and Pre-Algebra. In addition, spending a month studying abroad in Costa Rica gave me experience utilizing Spanish in a real-world setting, both in my role as a volunteer teacher in a 5th grade classroom and in daily life.
Although I am qualified to teach a wide variety of subjects, my favorite subjects to tutor would be English, particularly writing or composition, and Spanish. I enjoy helping students learn to effectively communicate their thoughts and opinions. Effective communication is a critical skill for success in higher education and the workplace. In addition, understanding other cultures is a necessity to function in today's diverse society.
I believe effective educators embrace diversity. They also teach in a way that makes the content relevant and applicable in a student's life. An instructor's job is to make lessons that are engaging, and even fun, whenever possible. An educator should be able to assess a student's strengths and weaknesses, and tailor instruction in a way that utilizes those strengths. He or she is willing to do whatever it takes for students to succeed. In addition, open communication between student, parent and teacher is a critical part of creating the necessary rapport to facilitate instruction. I strive to do all of these things when working with students and families.
In my spare time I enjoy doing Jido Kwon Tae Kwon Do, and I am proud to be a 2nd degree white belt. I find it is a great way to manage stress and serves as a source of physical activity. I also enjoy watching TV and shows on Netflix. My favorites include "NCIS", "NCIS: New Orleans", "Scandal" , "The Blacklist" and "Madam Secretary". I am active in my church and am assisting in the planning of outreach ministries to University students.
I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and or your child. If you have any questions I can answer, please reach out via the Varsity Tutors platform, via email, or by phone, Hope to hear from you soon!
