I am an 18-year-old hailing from the inner city of South Central Los Angeles, California. I am a Jackson State University Dubois-Harvey Honors College freshman with an English major and business marketing minor. My choice to study English was based on my love for reading and creative writing. Writing is the gift I see leading the bulk of my career in the arts; therefore, I wanted to be sure my skills were sharpened as I moved forward in pursuit of those goals. My minor was selected based on my passion for philanthropy. My goals include creating small businesses that serve the less fortunate of my community and working with Black female youth in non-profit mentoring settings. I plan to become a wise businesswoman, using my acquired knowledge in business and finance to set my businesses up for long-term success.
I chose Jackson State University as my dear old college home because of its status as a historically Black university, the study abroad programs they offer, the programs of study in my fields of interest, and the warm welcoming energy I encountered when first visiting the campus. My experience thus far at Jackson State has been a positive one. The staff and events are all catered toward bringing us a few steps closer to success and our goals. My professors inspire and encourage me to become better in various areas of academia and pursuit of knowledge. Working alongside other ambitious Black youth is a refreshing and motivating experience. I have recently found familiarity with membership in on-campus arts organizations such as M.A.D.D.R.A.M.A. Performance Troupe and Outspoken Arts Collective. This being only my first year, I am certain my experience can only improve from here.
After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school for my MFA in Creative Writing and continue to publish my writings. After grad school, I will continue my career as a performing artist and writer, and work in conjunction with a non-profit serving Black female youth. Upon security of funds, I plan to open my first small business in South Central Los Angeles.
I began tutoring at One Shine Youth & Community Services in Los Angeles in 2014. There I tutored students in elementary and middle school level math and English. I went on to mentor students in the college application process throughout highschool. I currently tutor middle school students at Blackburn Middle School in English, which I find very fulfilling. English is the subject where my heart is because communication is invaluable. I find that I best connect with students when I relate the material to their lives and make it tangible for them. Once they have established an interest, their capacity to receive knowledge is endless.
