My life has been one dedicated to the concept of service. From the time that I matriculated from university, my intentions and life path have been dedicated to this one goal. Starting out as a police officer for my local city, I wished to contribute positively to my community by protecting and serving to make it safer. I knew that without security, people would not have the basic foundations for surviving and thriving in their communities. After some time, I realized that my ambitions for service extended beyond my local community, so I decided once again to serve my country by joining the Coast Guard. I specifically entered the Coast Guard because I wanted my mission to be one of peace and not of war. I participated in both subordinate and leadership roles that buttressed my passions with skill sets which have benefited me for the entirety of my life, to which I will forever be grateful.
During my time in the Coast Guard, I did some traveling and realized that there was an entire world out there which I knew very little about, but had the intellectual and personal curiosity to want to explore and become involved in. Even during my years following the Coast Guard working as a background investigator, I volunteered in my local community tutoring both American citizens and refugees. Volunteering with organizations such as Refugee Transitions and the International Rescue Committee in Oakland California, provided me with yet another diverse and expansive outlook on life. I became immediately aware of both the privilege and positional requirement that I had to help in any way that I could. At the same time, however, I was humble and aware enough to know that I still needed to learn more before I could be of maximum use to those I wished to serve. This is the reason I decided to challenge myself both personally and intellectually by attending the University of San Francisco to obtain a master's degree in International Studies and development. In this program I had the privilege of learning about not only vital theories, cultures and histories, but also a deeper understanding of international aid and development as well as International Human Rights law and pertinent refugee issues.
After completing coursework, I wanted my newly gained knowledge to be practical, so instead of taking the semester to write a thesis in San Francisco like many of my counterparts, I decided that I wanted my thesis to be grounded in actual cultural inquiry as opposed to archival research. I used my time in China as a time of understanding, getting to know my local community and subsequently producing an ethnography on an important but limited research topic regarding the effects of economic development on a 6000 year old education system.
While my life has not been without challenge, my passion and dedication to my core mission of service, has been sustained by my determination, patience and humility.
