As a tutor who specializes in various subjects--language arts, literature, writing, social science, history, SAT and ACT prep, study skills, and academic habits--I believe that academic success comes from the student setting personal goals, finding the aspect of a subject that is relevant and exciting for him or her, and, most of all, employing strategies to achieve those goals. Be they reading or writing or test-taking strategies, thoughtful habits are what give students of all ages the edge they need to succeed. As a tutor, I want to work with students to devise strategies that work for them, build skills and confidence, and make reaching their goals possible. If my time as a student, teacher, and tutor has taught me anything, it has taught me that we can do anything if we have the right strategic plan.
I am a licensed English teacher in Illinois and completed my licensure coursework teaching middle grade and high school students in reading, writing, and literary analysis. I have taught English, social studies, and creative writing classes at the high school level. I have also worked with students of various backgrounds and English language proficiencies in and out of a classroom setting. I am fluent in the conventions of English grammar, the current best practices in writing instruction, and seek to include creative pursuits to achieve larger reading and writing goals.
I am well-versed in the SAT and ACT exams and am qualified to teach important time-saving strategies on all sections of these tests, including math and science. I have taught the reading and writing sections of these tests in high school classrooms and believe that the strategies students employ in these sections are relevant to the test as a whole. I can also give your student important process-based approaches to master the difficult essay portions of both of these exams.
