I, Jo Ann, am passionate about helping students, because I believe it is in the best interest of motivating students with a broad understanding of Reading, English, Writing, and creative Gifted Skills; while promoting personal and positive self-esteem both in and out of the classroom. My experiences working with students include being a tenacious, spirited, persistent, savage climber who does not take "no" for an answer. I
believe in setting goals with students, because where there is a will and opportunity available for growth, there is definitely a way!!
My experiences working with students have been 20 + enjoyable years that have been rewarding. I bring to the table a wealth of experiences, skills, years of proven success, and free-spirited of encouraging students thinking so learning light bulbs would light up and shine brightly. I facilitate instructions in the subject areas of Gifted English, Regular and Advance Language Arts. In addition, I taught classes in Title I Intensive Reading, Levels 1, 2, and 3 were explored with students. Other experiences include Administrative duties as Language Arts Chairperson, Team Leader of Eighth Graders, Head Interventionist, and Upward Bound Coordinator preparing students in "Survival Skills", in Reading, Writing, and Language Arts for their future endeavors. Other contributions have been teaching college level Remedial Reading, Levels 1-3 and contributions in Social Work. I worked, teaching Secondary Levels 9th through 12th grade in Title I Intensive Reading, Levels 1-3, Re-Takers 11th through 12th grade. Middle school 6th through 8th graders, Gifted English 6th -
8th graders, Advance/Regular English 6th through 8th grade. In Elementary school, I taught Reading classes 3rd through 6th Grade - "No Child Left Behind". Individual and small groups of students were pulled from classes to reinforce Writing Skills, review, re-teach, assess skills on various test, in Reading, Writing, and Language Arts Skills. Moreover, I also tutored Adults in night school looking to improve their Reading, Writing, and Language Arts Skills in Miami, Florida.
I am a graduate of Nova Southeastern University, Florida International University, Miami Dade College and Miami Northwestern Senior High School. I received my Master's Degree in Reading, Gifted, and School Social Worker, with a minor in English Education. My Bachelor's and Associate of Art's Degree is in Social Work, and a Minor in English Education. As a certified Reading K-12th Grade facilitator with certification in School Social Worker, Language Arts K-12 and Children and Families Staff Credentials, I have worked extensively in these subject areas, while tutoring Reading, Writing, and Language Arts Skills. My favorite subjects that I am passionate about is Reading, Writing, and English. I love these subject areas of learning, because Reading is a "Survival" skill you will encounter in every entity of your life. Writing is a comforting skill for me since I believe one has to be able to express one's self where others can read what you think, say, see, or feel.
Previously, I accepted Outstanding Recognition for many events, but those that stand out were Recognition first in high school, at Miami Northwestern Senior High School by submitting a "Slogan" for a school wide project for a theme and slogan. My winning Slogan was drafted to the "Hall of Fame", "Northwestern Builds for a Better Tomorrow" will remain the school's slogan forever. The second outstanding recognition was my high school graduation theme that was centered around the Slogan "Northwestern Builds for a Better Tomorrow" as a Graduation Theme. The third most outstanding recognition was the Publication of my Thesis for my Master's Degree, topic - "Reading Through Writing With Low Achievers"
My teaching philosophy is success constitutes first setting Goals for your Dreams. One has to step out, put forth maximum effort by exhibiting determination, hard work, sacrifice, push forward with the idea and passions to achieve set goals. Don't forget, we always want to have fun, fun, fun throughout the process of your journey!! My tutoring style is to work individually one-on-one or with small groups of 2-4 students. I bring to the tutoring session tangible items such as stuff animals, colorful visuals, posters, handouts, books, the white board to simplify the format of learning with other creative tools and supplies.
My outside interest in my spare time is Interior Decorating, putting personal touches on my own space and surroundings. Gardening is another love because it is a pleasure to see the abstract and beauty of "Mother Nature's" unique creations. Baking delicious moist, tasty Pound and Lemon Cakes is a skill inherited from my Foster Mother. Taking early morning strolls or brisk walks is indeed a time I dare not miss, when the sun is barely rising, and wild sounds of crickets, birds, and silence could be heard, because it is my quality time, to unwind with "SELF Reflections". This is where I get my inspirations to write from the beauty of Mother Nature's Seasons of the year.
I am excited to share that I look forward to this journey, so Learning Gains and excellent achievements will be accomplished in JASH1 Window's of Learning through contact and hard work. In my experiences helping struggling students prepare for subjects, Standardized Test, and Writing, I believe learning should be fun with prepping for Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm promoter of Education, knowing that it is essential for an improved quality of life, and I endeavor to impart my appreciation to all students. I encourage them to remain in school, hold on to their visions by keeping them alive, believe in yourself, put forth maximum effort and make things happen in your favor.
