I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BA in English in May of 2017. As much as I enjoyed pursuing my own interdisciplinary research interests by writing an honors thesis in my last year, I also value the many teaching opportunities I had throughout my undergraduate career. I worked at the University Writing Center (UWC) for two years. I was part of the pilot program for Course Specialist Consultants at the UWC, which involved embedding Writing Consultants in undergraduate courses to provide more specific consultations to students. I worked closely with the professors and TAs in two different classes to offer additional one-on-one writing support, and formed special bonds with the students who returned throughout the semester for help on multiple assignments. Many of my repeat consultees were English Language Learners, who gained incredible amounts of confidence in their own writing and argumentation skills over time. I also worked for the Liberal Arts Honors Program (LAH) as a Writing Fellow for two semesters, and essentially served as an undergraduate TA who provided weekly feedback to a group of 13-16 students for a mandatory writing course LAH holds every fall. Seeing the weekly advancements my students made was an incredible experience.
My teaching experiences during my undergraduate education were so rewarding that I have devoted my gap year to fighting education inequality in Austin, Texas as a Literacy First Tutor with AmeriCorps and the University of Texas at Austin. I work with children between kindergarten and second grade in one-on-one, research-based interventions to help them become better readers. Working with my students every day creates intense emotional bonds that make me personally motivated to help them succeed. Every time one of my students meets a goal in their daily lessons, we share the excitement because we both want them to succeed.
I hope to eventually become a professor of English in order to combine my love for academic research with my love for helping students become better, more confident writers.
