As an educator since 2002, helping students improve their lives has been my primary goal. I have a Master of Arts in English TESOL, a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education. I currently hold a dual teaching credential in special and elementary education. I have successfully taught students of all ages and proficiency levels from diverse cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds in varied learning environments. Teaching and tutoring enable me to instill a love of lifelong learning in my students while sharing my own enthusiasm for learning with them. I feel that I am a compassionate and dedicated teacher/tutor who is committed to continually striving to make a positive impact upon my students lives. My beliefs about teaching and learning are based upon the philosophy that instruction needs to be student-centered. A student-centered approach means that I facilitate a learning environment that is both interactive and collaborative. This type of learning environment stimulates and sustains students internal motivation, enables students to develop metacognitive strategies, and, in turn, promotes the desired outcomes of increased self-esteem, self-confidence, and attainment of academic and personal goals. It is also an environment in which students are assisted in constructing their own knowledge via inquiry and developing problem-solving skills via perseverance, effort, and creativity. I am committed to continually striving to make a positive impact upon my students lives and inspiring in them a love of lifelong learning.

My professional teaching experience is as follows:
My love of teaching began as a reading tutor for America Reads. Shortly after I obtained my BA degree in Liberal Studies, I pursued my MA degree in English/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, so that I could combine my love of teaching with my appreciation of and my interest in other cultures and languages. While a graduate teaching student, I taught at two community colleges and an international language institute in the San Francisco Bay Area. After graduating, I was an adjunct ESL instructor at a community college, as well as at a private university in Southern California. In these learning environments, I taught all levels of English for Academic Purposes and Intensive English. I also regularly taught speaking and listening courses. One of my biggest achievements while teaching at the community college level was developing and implementing curriculum for a three-week summer program for visiting college students from Taiwan. I have also worked in the capacity of an ESL tutor, and as an online ESL teacher. I have been a substitute teacher for twelve years at primary and secondary schools in Oregon, Hawaii, and California; and I have a dual teaching credential in special and elementary education. I completed my student teaching in two classrooms - a mixed 3rd and 4th grade general education class and a special education study skills class at the high school level. In these varied learning environments, I gained valuable experience recognizing students different needs, abilities and interests, as well as engaging and effective ways to differentiate instruction. I also participated in parent-student-teacher conferences and conducted IEP meetings where I gained valuable skills in communicating and collaborating with students and their family members. I recently finished a long-term special education substitute teaching assignment at Ashland School Districts transition program where I taught young adults with disabilities life skills such as, GED preparation, functional academics, employment readiness, how to access community resources, and how to live independently.

I look forward to working with you as your tutor to assist you with your academic needs.
