My name is Wynn O'Donnell, and I am recent graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans with a degree in finance. In my spare time, I love reading, running, painting/drawing, and spending time with my niece and nephew.
Tutoring is a passion of mine, and I have had extensive experience tutoring students with ages ranging from 7 to 18. I've helped students ace courses in a multitude of subjects by using a method I have developed through my years as a tutor.
First, I assess the student I am working with in order to identify problem subject areas or concepts. Through this, I determine the student's understanding of the material, identify his or her subject area or areas that require improvement, and gain valuable insight into the most effective way to tutor each student, as everyone learns differently. Using this information, I create individualized lesson plans for each of my students. I do not waste any time, as I know how valuable each session is. My goal is not just for the student to pass a test or class, but to master the material. I am passionate, patient, reliable, and extremely organized.
From January to March of my sophomore year, I decided to take a semester off. I used this time to travel to India, because the children were in the final months approaching their exams. I scheduled group or individual tutoring sessions, depending on each student's grade, level of comprehension, and ability to focus. The children spoke Hindi at home, as many of their parents did not speak any English. For this reason, the fact that the students were required to learn all of their subjects, including math, social studies, and science in English proved to be quite a challenge.
I learned to be extremely patient, explain concepts thoroughly, ask for feedback, and check in with each student individually to ensure that he or she understood the material. I adapted each lesson plan to each individual or group. Tutoring allowed me to see first-hand the importance of being receptive to the needs of those who I work for or with. As soon as I was able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the students, I created personalized lesson plans. Once I began using these lesson plans, their comprehension, confidence, performance, and focus sky rocketed. Six of my students scored within the top 5% of their class on their exams.
I've worked as a tutor at both the middle school and high school level during my 4 years at Tulane University. Most recently, for the past 6 months, I volunteered for an organization named Upward Bound, which is a free after school tutoring center for high school students. I have experience tutoring for the ACT and the SAT, history, math, english, along with many other subjects, and helping students with their college essays.
