I received a degree in Biochemistry from Occidental College in 2015. I minored in Spanish and have lived in a variety of foreign countries including Ecuador, Chile, and Costa Rica. Previously, I have tutored students in biology, Spanish, and music. However, I have always been willing to help fellow classmates with a variety of other topics, such as chemistry, math, and writing. I am currently working at an after-school program inspiring elementary school children with my passion for science. As such, I have worked with students with many different learning styles and I look forward to applying what I have picked up while teaching a multitude of students in more individualized sessions. My favorite subject to tutor is biology, although Spanish comes in a close second. I find that both subjects open student's eyes to a different way of thinking about the world and are very rewarding, both for myself and the student. I also draw on the abundance of experiences I have had in science when bringing in additional references while I am teaching, enabling me to convey my enthusiasm for the subjects. My personal teaching philosophy is that mastery comes from practice. These tutoring sessions are a way for students to review and apply what they are learning in class so that they feel confident when they are tested on the material, not only at the end of this class but when they must implement the material in future classes as well. One way to practice the material comes from thinking about the material beyond the classroom and recognizing it in their everyday lives. To do so, I like to identify a few activities that interest the student and connect ideas from the classroom to those activities. Through this method, they begin to think about more specific topics in much larger ways. I also understand that not all students learn the same way. As stated previously, I teach as part of an after-school program with a variety of age groups and learning levels. Sometimes the best way to get through to a student is to think about the problem from a different point of view. I have used many different techniques to do so, from building models to designing physical activities that relate to the coursework. Outside of academia I enjoy running and playing the clarinet. I also play basketball and chess, although I am not great at the latter two. I am currently applying for my PhD and plan to pursue a graduate degree in Biomedical Sciences.
