I'm passionate about teaching a wide range of subjects in both one-on-one and classroom settings. I have experience teaching scientific subjects ranging from high school level chemistry to upper-division microbiology courses. In my free time, I volunteer at Boulder high school as a tutor for 10th graders. I view teaching as an expression of my passion for science and the natural world. It's an immense privilege to share my knowledge with students, and I've found that helping students realize their passions, understand previously inscrutable ideas, or connect seemingly unrelated concepts to be incredibly rewarding. I like to emphasize the context and the significance of concepts, and always try and show students "the big picture," especially when dealing with biological systems. I'm always excited to dig deeper on subjects that students are interested in, and will happily send follow up emails after class if questions are unable to be addressed during a session.
At the same time, I recognize that students who seek tutoring are often just trying to survive a challenging or un-engaging pre-requisite class, or are struggling with a standardized test that is standing between them in their dreams. Where passion fails, an efficient and thoughtful approach to breaking down and organizing material will succeed. I am a firm believer in studying and learning efficiently, and always emphasize understanding core concepts and skills that will be high yield topics on exam day. Moreover, I believe that test taking strategies and problem solving skills are as important to a student's success in modern academics as understanding course content. I've taken countless tests, including the GRE and MCAT, throughout my academic career, which have all helped me learn and develop a number of straightforward strategies that work extremely well, especially on multiple choice tests. I work with ALL of my students on testing strategies to make sure they have the best chance possible on any exam they're preparing for, especially if they run in to a question they're uncertain about or are under time pressure. As a teacher, I am deeply invested in the success of my students, and I recognize that everyone has different backgrounds, goals, and preferences for learning. I cater each lesson specifically to my student's age, interests, learning style, and educational needs.
I look forward to working with you! My schedule is generally very flexible, and I am happy to meet both in person or over skype.
