My professional career in community development has taught me the value of patience, active listening and working with those from a wide variety of personal backgrounds and experience. Everybody learns differently, and I seek to meet students where they are, in regards to their skill level. I see my job as communicating information and concepts to students in ways that are most effective for them. My satisfaction comes from seeing a student have their aha moment, when they realize how the information clicks for them. Better prepared students have the potential to make better communities.
I want to make the tutoring process enjoyable, not something that the learner dreads to attend. To this end, I will want to get to know the students interests so that I can better accomplish this goal. Research shows that the more connections we make to a piece of information, the better we can retain it. Bringing in extracurricular interests to the lesson can help the student better enjoy the session and make the subject matter more relevant.
My favorite subjects are reading, writing, biology (especially health and environmental studies), and program management. Ive taught at the college level, trained adults and coached people one-on-one. I enjoy relating both theoretical and practical concepts to my students own lives so they can learn, appreciate, and retain concepts that are essential to success in the classroom and in a career. My son, now an honor student in college, has kept me grounded in tutoring from younger age levels through college.
When I am not working, I love to get on my road bike and ride. Ive cycled since I was a child and still love the feeling of pedaling, climbing hills and going fast down them. Other interests of mine include reading and listening to music.
