My name is Sara and I love to work with people. Although I am currently teaching online, I miss the face to face interaction that comes with working with students, especially one-to-one or in a small group.
From 1986 to the present, I have had the opportunity to teach in the United States, as well as abroad in the Middle East. Although I have taught and/or tutored all levels K-12, I seem to have a fondness for upper elementary through the first years of high school. I think this is because I remember the struggles of being a pre-teen and teenager, and the challenges that were faced. It wasn't easy back in the '70s, and it certainly isn't now.
My areas of concentration in college (Western Michigan University - Kalamazoo, MI) for my BA were in elementary education, math, and English. Continuing on at Western for an MA, I pursued this in Teaching in the Elementary School. All of this took place from 1982 - 1986.
From Texas to the United Arab Emirates and back to the US, I have taught a variety of cultures and abilities. Although academics have always come easily to me, I truly understand that this is not true for all students, case in point, my own son.
When asked to describe me, three words that students often use are funny, approachable, and caring. To be honest, it bothers me if a teacher can't be approachable or isn't caring; why else would one go into this profession unless you care about children/people? I think it very important to be empathetic and a good listener; students want to know that you pay attention to them and value their thoughts and ideas!

I live on a small farm, so I love to spend time with the alpaca, goats, chickens, ducks, guineas, emu, pig, and cow. They know that they are pets (spoiled rotten) and have a great life. Also, I love to read.
