I am a graduate of Whitman College, and Im looking for opportunities to tutor here at home, before I travel to Spain to teach English for a year. Exploring how words can expand peoples world views and bring them together through the empowerment of education has been central to my college experience. As an English Language Fellow at Whitman College, I tutored international students who want help learning to write formal academic essays in English. My passion for words, communication, poetry, and story led me to take courses entirely devoted to Syntax & Grammar, to add a Creative Writing minor to my English Major, and to explore the possibilities of translation in my Advanced Spanish courses. These passions prompted me to pass on what I learned to others. My experiences tutoring students at levels from elementary through college have prepared me to meet any student where they are at, assess their goals, and make plans to address their needs. For me, good tutoring means talking person to person, not lecturing. Talking down to someone never lifts them up. Good tutoring means asking students what they want to achieve, gauging the steps they need to take to get there, and working together to cover that distance. Its about breaking down abstract and theoretical concepts into clear illustrations, and then building up from the basics to complexity. We all need to know what is on the bottom line, whether we are reading a contract, a sci-fi novel, or an epic poem. Sometimes we just need to raise our test score a few points and sometimes we need to learn to write a stronger thesis, either way, a good tutor helps put things into perspective. That way we can make an informed interpretation, craft a cogent analysis, and articulate our own thoughts clearly to others. Thats the basis of everything, from acing the SAT and to writing memos as a CEO. There are strategies for making sense of any sentence, you just need to know how to look at it. I can help.
