As a former instructor at the University of Iowa, I have several years' experience teaching literature and cinema studies courses. The focus in these courses was on reading, analysis, and written argumentation. As an instructor, my aim was always to balance my rigorous standards for writing and class participation with an empathetic approach that understood that students come from different backgrounds and bring different abilities to the class. I think of my approach to teaching as finding an approach that makes the subject personally engaging to students.
I have a BA in English Literature, a Master's in Film Studies, and am ABD (all but dissertation) in my current Film Studies PhD program. My scholarship has given me a firm grasp on APA, MLA, and Chicago writing styles. Subjects such as literature and writing (at any level) are therefore my strength.
In addition to my work at the university, I have also worked previously as a tutor for standardized tests. I am happy to relay strategies and share insights with students studying for such exams, particularly the ACT.
My scholarship focuses on German film history, which has given me a solid grasp of German and the particular difficulties English speakers have learning it. As my German is currently at B2+ (one half-level below fluency) on the Common European Framework of Reference, I'm happy and open to working with elementary and intermediate German-learners.
Finally, I am an occasional film and media critic. You can find some of my work to that end here: http://www.thecinessential.com/patrick-brown.
For fun, I enjoy games of many stripes board, card, paper & pencil, trivia, puzzles, and video games. I try to read as much as possible in my free time, primarily fiction and the occasional comic. I'm a bad cook but I like cooking, and I'm a bad singer but I like karaoke.
