My name is Paula. For the past 12 years, I have lived, and worked in the US. However, I was born, raised, and educated in Finland, in a country with one of the best educational systems in the world.
I started tutoring, when I was in college, working on my degree in chemical engineering. My classmate had French during one of the math classes, so I ended up teaching her the entire math class, which was fun. In college, I tutored in many subjects, such as math, chemistry, and economics.
After my Master’s, I did my Ph.D. in chemical engineering. After working a while, I went back to school, and got my teacher certificate. I worked two years as a math, physics, and chemistry teacher in high school, before I moved to the US. I was supposed to stay here in Cincinnati, Ohio only for a couple of years, as a post-doc researcher. However, I am still on that trip. After my post-doc research position, I ended up working 10 years in the industry, before I became a Varsity Tutor.
I am a science tutor, primarily helping students in subjects like chemistry and math. Also, since I am currently finishing my Master’s in psychology, I can help out in that, too. I learned German early on at school, and used German every day for 5 years, here in a job in the US, so therefore, I can tutor students in the German language as well.
I teach theory by showing practice examples. I think it is important for the student to learn:
• By solving problems
• By experiencing, and doing exercises, by having those aha! moments, and really to understand the fundamentals, and how to apply the knowledge
• Visualizing, drawing (diagrams/pictures/tables), and summarizing is important as well
I am pretty easy going. I relax by playing with my kids, watching TV, doing outdoor activities, or going to the gym. I am excited to be a Varsity Tutor, and I hope to be as helpful and useful as possible.
