Music has been the driving creative force in my life since I was a teenager, and I have had a

passion for teaching and sharing music with others since the 1970’s. I feel both grateful and

extremely fortunate to have had a career in teaching music and performing, including 31 years

of full-time university teaching in the academic areas of music and music therapy. In addition to

university teaching, I have enjoyed working with school-aged students as a music therapist and

music educator in regular and special education settings. Teaching during Summers at the

National Guitar Workshop for a number of years was also stimulating and challenging. My

approach to teaching continues to be to individualize the teaching and learning experience for

each student. This is a student-centered approach that includes clearly defining student learning

outcomes, using active teaching methods that engage students in the music and leaning materials,

being patient and encouraging, and providing additional on-lime help to students outside of

lessons. I also incorporate evaluation methods that give students concrete feedback on their

learning and performance. In summary, I believe I am a caring, patient, and encouraging

instructor who puts the needs and musical goals of each student needs first, no matter their age,

ability, or musical focus.
