I grew up in Manhattan, graduated Cum Laude from Northwestern University with a degree in Theatre (emphasis on Directing), and finished my time there by directing the Radio, Television, and Film Department's largest short film of the year, based on a French farce that I had directed as a play a year earlier.
I taught bilingual (Spanish/English) Kindergarteners as a volunteer at the Association to Benefit Children, tutored French students in my own grade level during high school, and have worked as a private sitter/tutor crossover, focusing on French language, English (improvement of vocabulary, grammatical structure, and creative writing skills), and literature. I am half-Indian (I tutor Hindi-Urdu) and half-German, and am certain that my parents' creative use of English (both of them speak it as a second language) helped broaden my understanding of its nuances.
I feel that taking standardized tests, such as the SAT, AP exams, and SAT Subject Tests is a learned skill. I was fortunate enough to be taught how to take tests from a young age. I received a score of 2160 on my first SAT (800 Writing, 730 Critical Reading, 660 Math) taken at the beginning of my sophomore year of high school. I did not prepare for the test beyond completing a few timed practice tests in a book. I believe that many students who are capable of scoring well receive low scores because they are not familiar with the structure and common pitfalls of the exam. Performance anxiety is another major downfall, especially in the high-pressure environment surrounding college applications. I teach students to recognize and circumvent these pitfalls, and to gamify test-taking.
I have spent time in Paris yearly since birth and have studied French since I was nine years old. I am not a native speaker: I struggled with many aspects of French grammar in grade school, but worked through them to achieve fluency (my French teacher had me compete in Le Grand Concours my senior year and I won several prizes). I conduct all high-level French tutoring sessions in French.
I enjoy getting students invested in their material and being a part of instilling a love of learning.
