Nick. Im a recent BioMedical Engineering graduate from UC San Diego and Im planning on attending graduate school there in the fall. Starting in high school I tutored students in piano and in chemistry but most loved coaching students in debate. This involved meeting up with people one-on-one, finding out where they need to improve, and developing them personally so that they can make the right arguments and make them effectively.
As for tutoring in subjects like math and science, I think one of the most important things is to truly understand why a concept works and why it is relevant. Its easy to get bogged down when something seems arbitrary or pointless so I really want to help students understand the reason for a certain concept or idea. I think pictures and analogies are always far more helpful then abstract explanations and I will try to use these to give students as intuitive of an understanding as possible. I always want to stress learning how to figure things out over just memorizing formulas. What you simply memorize you will forget, but what you learn, even if you forget the specifics, you can always figure out again because you know how to do so.
Other than tutoring, I enjoy drawing and reading. And I especially enjoy being outside or playing sports such as basketball, ultimate frisbee, and skateboarding. No fancy tricks though, unfortunately. Im not cool enough. But just cruising around school is really fun.
