When I was a university student, a professor asked me to tutor a few students who were taking his Early Modern Philosophy class outside of their major. During the course of those sessions, I learned how fun it is to help people understand material and, even better, to help a student discover an effective way to approach information. I have pursued my love of teaching and tutoring in the venues of songwriting, guitar, test preparation, history, and massage therapy. Now I'm pleased to offer tutoring on a variety of topics with Varsity Tutors.
Since my university background is in philosophy, I've been trained through example in Socratic Dialogue, a method of teaching in which the student is guided to knowledge through questions. This way, the student not only understands the answer to the question but knows the process of how to get there, and can access the problem in a number of different ways. My training also includes philosophical investigations of logic, which applies to any subject, and helps especially with test taking.
I'm have endless curiosity in many topics including world history, anthropology, Latin American history and politics, economic history and theory, social justice theory and practice, and health and wellness. I love literature, especially Russian literature and magical realism, among many others.
I currently work part-time as a songwriter, playwright, poet, and story composer. I find words, the English language, and composition engaging, especially the relationship between the conventions of language, meaning, and the structure of a work. I hope my passion for the written word will transfer to my tutoring students.
I'm excited for the opportunity to explore topics with students, and help you reach your academic goals.
