I have enjoyed my time as a middle and high school teacher for the past 5 years and the time I spent as an associate teacher before that. As an associate teacher, I made sure to follow through with the lesson plans that teachers had set out for me to implement and provided the teachers feedback on each class.
In December of 2019 I earned my MBA in Business Development and Sales Management. In December of 2013, I obtained a Bachelor of the Arts in Education from the University of Houston- Downtown. During my time in college, I took a few theatre courses and made the Deans List. I am currently a 7th grade reading teacher. As a teacher, it is important to me to create a positive and engaging environment for students. I have created rigorous lesson plans that have involved many projects and research papers. I have also ensured that my students explore many different realms of not only literacy, but the art of literacy by having them create beautiful poems, putting on plays and commercials, many of which the students have written. It takes a lot of hard work to achieve great results. In my lessons, I have
incorporated several opportunities for students to work together in student led activities included but not limited to: readers theatre, gallery walks, and student created anchor charts that they present and explain concepts to their peers. Placing high performing students with students that are in need of more support has proven to be highly effective. Students tend to enjoy learning from each other in this
small comfortable environment.I have worked hard in ensuring my students are ready for the STAAR test by holding after
school tutorials weekly as well as Saturdays. Last year as a first year teacher, my students performed
exceptionally well on their STAAR test.
As a reading teacher, I choose reading material that is of high interest to my students. For example, last year, I read To Selena, With Love by Chris Perez, her widower, aloud as my students followed along for our biography unit. I took that opportunity to teach various reading concepts such as making connections, characterization, plot development, inferencing, and writing, etc. When we concluded our lesson, the students wrote letters to the author and in return, he surprised them with a visit which included a Q&A. This allowed students to be able to look at the book from the authors perspective which is an essential reading concept.
Its important to me to take my students learning beyond the classroom environment. Last year, I was the one in my grade level to plan out, organize, and raise money for our field trips. Every Tuesday morning at 7am I dedicated my time to volunteering to sharing my knowledge and techniques in theatre with students who are interested and want to be a part of the experience and heighten their level of art and reading combined. In my theatre class, my students have learned the basics of theatre ranging from improving their vocal range, understanding stage directions and camera angles when reading a play or screenplay, visualization, exploring improvisation, and even touching the base of acting with doing a few fun scenes.
