While obtaining my Mathematics Bachelor’s degree at Clark Atlanta University, I never thought about becoming a teacher. Although I started tutoring in the math lab at the college, tutored elementary through graduate school students and I was a Teacher’s assistant during my matriculation though undergrad, teaching was not something that crossed my mind. While pursuing a degree in Statistics, I again was given the opportunity to look at teaching as a possible career choice while being a TA for a few Statistics classes. This is when I realized that I should give it a try. I went back to Clark Atlanta University and pursued a Master’s degree in Secondary Math Education. I enjoyed learning about the different types of students that I would get the chance of introducing and hoping to form a love for math. During my student teaching at the middle and high school, I realized that I picked the right career choice. Being in front of the class and teaching those students seemed to come naturally.

Even after beginning my teaching career, I still find time to tutor in the evenings and on the weekends. I love tutoring because of the one-to-one. I believe that tutoring over the last 13 years has helped me tremendously in my teaching career and I plan on continuing to improve myself as a teacher and tutor.

When I teach, I try to find the strengths of the student and go from there. All students are good at something, it is just up to the teacher/tutor to find it and use it to help the student grow. I love using analogies and scenarios to help students to understand different math concepts. Also, I like trying to form a relationship with my students so that they can become comfortable with me. This helps them to relax and they will feel better about math and asking questions if they know that someone is here that cares about them as a person.

When I am not teaching and tutoring, I enjoy watching movies, traveling and music. I have been playing the clarinet since I was in the 6th grade and participated in band in middle school, high school, college (undergrad and graduate school) and currently in a community band. Math and music are my passions!
