My extensive work in the educational sector has allowed me to develop a wide array of skills so that I can best help students become fluent with the language of mathematics. This includes experiences that range from full-time teaching to curriculum development with a startup company in Silicon Valley. Specifically, these experiences each provide a unique viewpoint on mathematical teaching and learning, giving me a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to make an impact in students lives in regards to content mastery. This in turn is supported by my love of mathematics and my desire to share its significance with anyone that wants or needs to learn it. Nevertheless, with all of these opportunities, I have had the unique chance of encountering a wide variety of needs and interpreting them in such a way so that every student grows and takes one-step closer towards success.
On the other hand, these experiences have made me realize that teaching content can only get students so far; the role of the teacher must extend to include the title of mentor if students are truly going to achieve their dreams. This can be seen not only in my classroom where we take time to discuss our goals and how we can achieve them by working hard relentlessly, but it also can be seen with my mentoring groups and my one-on-one interactions with students. Simply, I try to develop an understanding of every student that I work with so that I can be the best educator and mentor for them. Because of this understanding, I not only try to bridge our goals with mathematics by developing an understanding of the “why learn math,” but I also try to develop my lessons or discussions in such a way that every student finds purpose behind our interactions. And if anything, I am amiable, very kind, and I approach every individual with the same bright smile and open heart regardless of their background; I can utilize the relationships that I form to motivate my mentees and students to relentlessly strive for a common goal.
